I believe that everyone to various extents are spectators observing their own lives, a perpetual motion machine like the moon observing the Earth. One observation of mine, is that England is a country of self defeating people, who reject ambition, risk and drive. One of my motives for making art is a rejection of this ingrained apathy, but recently I have began exploring my own roots within my art and have learned to be fascinated with the place i have always considered boring - that being the culture and heritage that I come from in Northern England. Through my work I not only explore class but also religion, crime, psychology and heritage - which are topics spectactors may choose to consider when viewing my work. I would like people to see my art as translations of my lived obersvations, and hopefully they see aspects of their own lives too, causing introspection. I wish to pay respect and critique my own heritage as it guides me, and many others, into uncertain futures.
Nike culture is the sociological word to describe the identity adopted by young working class people who adopted symbols, brands and clothing as a form of status and power. It reminds me of the pagan tribes that once ruled the country and mindset of that tribalism, so here I am playing with ideas of past and present, by depicting a forgotten pagan god in a balaclava and a Nike body bag.

The coal miners of England choked in the mines until their lungs blackened to push their family into a better tomorrow. This is a member from my fictional cult who believe they are the true inheritors of England and believe it is their duty to push the country into the future they see fit. The photograph is a member in a state of prayer, a divine exultation that comes from wearing his hands on his face like a breathing mask his fathers before him would have worn, he believes what he is doing is for a greater purpose but he is malformed and twisted for the machinations of the people above him.

England is a country of diverse people with diverse ideas about its history and present day state. Icons of history are heroes or villains but the truth is usually in between. This work is indicating how people perceive the history differently as no one will see the same thing in this piece inspired by Rorschach inkblot tests.
